Language List
These are languages I have studied/am studying and my approximate level of proficiency. Last updated 21/12/2018.
English - main language, although technically the second language I learnt (spoken daily since age 5 )
Portuguese - Technically my first language as I was born in Brazil and didn't move to England until I was 5, but in the process of being taught English I forgot most of my Portuguese. I consider myself fluent now, but in the past few years I have gotten out of practice since my mother moved away and I am no longer using it almost daily. Have started practising this again so I don't lose it.
French - Studied in school from ages 11 - 18. Would like to start practising this again as I think I've forgotten quite a lot.
Spanish - I'm not entirely sure on my proficiency level here. Due to its similarity with Portuguese I find reading it to be very easy. Listening and speaking are a lot more difficult. As my mother spends most of her time in Spain now I have started trying to practice this. I tested myself on Duolingo and somehow passed every checkpoint without doing a lesson, so I need to find a new resource!
Japanese - I have been studying this off and on for some time now (with not as much progress as I would like). I think I'm at a point where I could take the N5 exam. I've been focusing a lot on kanji lately. On wanikani I am currently level 9.
Languages I have not studied (or studied very little) but would like to:
Italian - I briefly started to teach myself this. I think the language is beautiful but I've mostly abandoned this, for the time being at least, as I wanted to try out a non-romance language for some variety.
Chinese - I tried this out on LingoDeer and was pleasantly surprised that I could understand some of the characters from studying Kanji in Japanese, and also that the grammar was a lot easier. Potentially looking to learn this.
Korean - I like that the grammar is similar to Japanese but that the alphabet is so much easier. I've taught myself most of the alphabet.
Thinking about:
Thai
Swedish
