Obligatory introductory post

This post is just a brief introduction into the background of the author of this blog and what my intentions are for it.

I'm not necessarily aiming this towards any audience, this is mainly for my own purposes - however, if anyone does find any use out it, then that would be an added bonus.

Background

I was born in Brazil, but when I was around 5 years old we moved to England, and I have lived there ever since (excluding 4 years of Uni in Scotland).

I consider myself to be fluent in Portuguese, however as I left Brazil before school age my written Portuguese is not the best. I can read and write without issue, I just make a lot of writing mistakes like spelling, missing accents etc. Also, I used to read mainly 'gibis' aka comic books. My language is mostly colloquial/informal spoken Portuguese. Ask me to read a textbook or anything too complicated, and I start getting hopelessly lost.

At school in England, I studied German from the ages of 11-13 and French from 11-18.

I love languages and watching TV programmes/films from other countries. Every time I hear someone speaking in another language I immediately want to learn it.

At the moment I am actively trying to study Japanese (I wanted to try something completely different, and I love how Japanese sounds and their culture). Also, my mother is retiring to Spain and is almost fluent in Spanish herself so I want to try and learn this as I think I'll have a decided advantage with Portuguese.

I'm realistic enough to know I can never possibly learn every language in the world, but optimistic enough that I would like to learn as many as I can. I have a bad habit of trying to take on too many at once though.

Aim of this blog

  • To make any important notes as I'm learning various languages
  • To practice writing entries in those languages
  • To reflect on my progress by looking back at older entries
  • To collect lists of my resources etc. into one location
  • Anything else I feel like
